Update: Deadly Flooding Covers Pakistan

The Indus River flows south bringing with it destructive floodwaters that continue to wreak havoc on the lives of millions of Pakistanis. It has been 50 years since the river that runs the length of the country has risen this high, and it is expected to keep rising. The monsoon rains feed the bulging river that gradually engulfs more homes, more farms, more towns, more lives.

Monsoon Flooding Ravages Pakistan

Government forces and aid agencies struggle to care for the more than 3 million people affected by this year’s monsoon floods in Pakistan. Meteorologists forecast further rains and flash flooding across the north of the country. Swollen rivers move southward, overflowing their banks, washing away homes and crops along the way. The Pakistani government expects rebuilding efforts to take at least six months. Already 1,400 people are reported to have died in the flooding.

Six months later: Hope in Haiti after the quake

It was six months ago that a 7.0-magnitude earthquake shook Haiti, destroying the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in seconds. On the surface, not much has changed there. Even as Haitians continue to function in what many are calling the “new normal,” millions are still struggling to survive. Yet, while there is no quick cure for the brokenness found in Haiti, thousands have been finding hope through the efforts of the Church of the Nazarene. It’s showing up in communities throughout the country where Nazarenes are reaching out with practical expressions of God’s love.

Clean Water in Haiti Giving Hope to the Thirsty

It is not hard to understand why one in eight children will not reach his or her fifth birthday in Haiti. Since water is so expensive, children, usually the ones responsible for the task of retrieving water, must find water for activities like bathing in a nearby stream. This stream is also where trash gets washed to and where cattle are watered. Contaminates easily find their way into children’s little bodies which have not yet had the opportunity to build a strong immune system.

Just over a month ago, the people of Fiji were preparing themselves for hurricane Tomas and the inevitable damage to be inflicted on their small, vulnerable island villages and humble homes. They were united in fear; they were united in the uncertainty of what the extreme weather conditions would wreak on their lives, families, and homes.

Weeks ago, after news of the earthquake in Haiti reached the New Hope Church of the Nazarene in Fairfield, CA, Pastor Scott Walker issued a call for compassion. One church member responded by asking a nearby business for assistance. Convinced to help, the Far West Rice company in Durham, CA, offered to donate and ship 40,000 pounds of rice for relief efforts in Haiti. They even packaged it all in 5-pound bags for easier distribution. Nazarene Haitian pastors are now using this rice donation to reach out to those in need in their communities.

Update: Asia-Pacific Recovering from Natural Disasters

Local Nazarene churches have taken the initiative in responding to their communities, working out of their own resources and turning to the district only when they have depleted these. Many of the churches are still serving as evacuation centers, and distributing material assistance. The focus for their relief efforts in the days ahead will continue to be provision of food, then assessing the re-construction needs.

The Asia-Pacific Region has been bombarded by natural disasters over the past few days. The destruction of each is not yet ascertainable, and death tolls are only expected to rise.
