Communities in the southern Philippines are still assessing the devastation left in the wake of a storm that slammed into Mindanao Island over the weekend. Tropical Storm Washi, known locally as Sendong, triggered flooding and landslides that caused the deaths of at least 700 people—most of them children—in Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan City, and the surrounding towns. Another 800 people are still reported missing on the island, and more than 35,000 people have been displaced. The extent of damage done to more remote villages is still unknown.

Joplin, MO is looking at a major recovery effort after a tornado ripped a swath of damage through the city nearly a mile wide and four miles long. The damage caused by Sunday night’s tornado, tearing through 2,000 structures and killing at least 116 people, will be compounded by oncoming storms. Schools, churches, homes, businesses, and a hospital were significantly damaged or destroyed by strong winds and direct tornado contact. Fortunately, water and electricity are available for the majority of the city. Communication and transportation infrastructure were damaged and the essential effort to restore phones and clear roads is ongoing. Relief workers are working to provide for those whose homes have been destroyed.

People struggle with cold, lack of services in Japan

The Japanese people battle the elements as cold weather persists and Japan’s natural gas companies suspend service to most of the northeastern part of the country.

Japanese use natural gas for cooking mainly, said Asia-Pacific Region missionary Tomo Hirahara, whose Nazarene home church is in Oyama City.

But power companies also struggle to maintain service in several cities as aftershocks continue and the country tries to thwart further disaster with its nuclear and conventional power plants following a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami March 11.

At least 5,000 died in the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck the northeast coast of Japan last week, and that number could increase as rescue teams continue their search for more than 10,000 people reported missing.

Shouei Abe, pastor of Sendai Church of the Nazarene, was one of thousands who escaped the tsunami that destroyed 10 towns in the region with populations of more than 1,000 each.

The Sendai church, which was dedicated a year ago, sustained some damage and is one of a few structures standing in the wake of destruction. Although some areas remain without power or reduced power due to the nuclear power plant situation, the Sendai church now has electricity and Internet access.
