Nazarene Disaster Response
Family Disaster Plan...
Contact your local emergency management or civil
defense office and find out what types of disaster are most likely
to occur in you community. Know the correct response to community
warning signals.
Consider the following when
creating a
family disaster response plan:
- Determine the best escape routes from your home.
- Decide where to meet outside your home in case of sudden or long-
term emergency.
- Find safe spots in your home for each type of disaster.
- In the event of a community or state-wide disaster, have an out-of-state
friend serve as your family contact. (Remember, it is easier for
you to call your contact than for them to try to reach you).
- Post emergency telephone numbers by phones.
- Teach children how and when to call 911 or your Medical Emergency Services.
- If possible, show each family member how and when to turn off
the water, gas, and main electrical switches.
- Teach each family member how to use a fire extinguisher (preferably
ABC type) and keep it in a regular place.
- Regularly check the smoke detectors in your home.
- Keep a stocked kit of emergency supplies.
- Quiz your kids every six months so they remember what to do.
- Conduct fire and emergency evacuation drills.
- Replace stored water every three months and stored food every six months.
- Test and recharge your fire extinguisher(s) according to manufacturer's
instructions.
- Test your smoke detectors monthly and change batteries at least once
a year.
- If you suspect damage to electrical or gas systems, use a flashlight(s)
and avoid turning on electrical switches or lighting matches.
- Check on your neighbors, especially those that are elderly or disabled.
If disaster strikes...
- Remain calm and patient. Put your plans into action.
- Check for injuries and get help for those seriously injured.
- Have a battery-powered radio to listen to disaster-related information
and instructions.
- If advised to evacuate, wear protective clothing and sturdy shoes.
- Work together with your pastor, church family, and neighbors until
help arrives.
