Hurricane Katrina Update August 31 12:00 PM CST
The evacuation of New Orleans has begun in full force in the wake
of Hurricane Katrina. The Army Corps of Engineers is working to fill
the breaks in the levies with huge 3,000 pound sandbags, which is
the crucial first step in draining water from the city. The main water
supply for the city has been compromised, phone lines are down throughout
the city and there is no immediate timetable for the return of electricity.
The Navy has mobilized 4 warships and one hospital vessel to sail
for the effected areas with clean water, food and supplies as well
as personnel to help in rescue operations. Fifty Army helicopters
have also been reserved for evacuation and rescue as the need arises.
The State of Texas has opened the Astrodome to receive the more than
25,000 refugees still in New Orleans who will be bussed in a massive
convoy to Houston today. Governor Rick Perry has also announced that
?the doors of Texas Public Schools will be open to the children of
families left homeless.?
Search and rescue teams are hard at work in Mississippi and all along
the Gulf Coast searching through debris fields for survivors of flooding.
The death toll in Mississippi alone has risen to 110 with many more
expected to come as recovery continues.
Recovery operations continue in Southern Florida, where Katrina struck
last week as a category 1 storm, on her way to the Gulf. Eleven deaths
have been reported.
Nazarene churches on the Panhandle of Florida have joined with other
denominations to prepare for the estimated 250,000 newly homeless
people to be sent there.
Nazarene Disaster Response teams plan to embark from Florida later
today in an attempt to reach the affected areas of Mississippi and
Louisiana. Several hundred Nazarenes are currently being sheltered
at the Louisiana District Campground and numerous churches in the
area.
We encourage you to continue your prayer support for these hurricane
victims and urge you to send support for the relief efforts. Persons
