  • More than 22,000 killed in Myanmar Cyclone
    Cyclone Nargis slammed through a 30,000 square kilometer area of the coast of Myanmar over the weekend, leaving destruction and death in its wake.  
  • Haitians suffer in the midst of food insecurity
    The current food crisis in the Republic of Haiti stems from rapidly rising food prices fueled by the worldwide oil crisis. The price of rice and beans, which are staples in Haiti, has risen dramatically in the past few months.
  • Congo & Rwanda face 6.1 magnitude earthquake
    More than 300 people were injured and 40 people killed in a 6.1 magnitude earthquake that shook the South Kivu area on the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. 
  • Update: Churches affected in political unredt in Kenya
    The political crisis in Kenya continues ....The crisis, however, extends well beyond political contentions.
  • Flooding in Central Africa
    As the rainy season in Central Africa continues, the countries located along the Zambezi River – Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Zambia – face increasing rainfall and rising riverbanks.
  • Kenya Unrest
    The sky is darkened with smoke, burning cars and tires mark the streets, houses burn too, windows are broken. People with a handful of personal belongings run seemingly aimless through the streets, trying to save their lives as others run and smash everything that is in their way. The sound of sporadic gunshots fills the air. Children cry.

  • The Hands and Feet of Jesus Christ in the midst of the Storm
    Six weeks after Tropical Storm Noel, people are still displaced from their homes and living in shelters.  On December 11, 2007, they faced another setback as Tropical Storm Olga began to pound the already rain soaked country.  Olga raced across Puerto Rico and the island of Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti) requiring many to once again flee from their homes.
  • Bangladesh Update: There was nothing left...
    Robert was concerned. The winds had been increasing steadily. He went to the ministry center and the little school to see whether all was well. Then he made his way to see his parents and friends. He knew their meager huts could not withstand a heavy storm.  He told them, “Please, take your children and essential belongings, and go to the Catholic or Nazarene ministry centers. You will be safer there!”
  • Update on Bangladesh Tropical Storm
    The cyclone that hit Bangladesh on November 15, 2007 affected 23 districts (political) in Bangladesh. Of these, 14 districts were severely affected. According to the government, 2,388 have died. People expect that they will find many more dead in the next few day as rescue efforts continue. Some reports forecast that there may be as many as 10,000 fatalities.
  • Tropical Cyclone Wipes out Nazarene Ministries
    Cyclone Sidr hit land in Bangladesh at night on Thursday, November 15, 2007.  According to the Associated Press, at least 1,100 people have lost their lives and thousand more, their homes. 
  • Tropical Storm Noel Update
    Three weeks after the storm, the island of Hispaniola is still reeling from the affects of Tropical Storm Noel.  Many creeks and rivers are still running high.  Many homes and entire communities still have water in and around them.
  • Tropical Storm Noel Moves Through the Caribbean
    The Dominican Republic and Haiti knew they would get some rain out of the latest tropical storm, but most people, including the forecasters thought the storm would pass south of the island just as it did during Hurricane Dean.  But Sunday night, the storm took an unexpected turn and began to dump buckets of rain on the Dominican Republic. 
  • Hurricane Felix wreaks havoc in Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua
    Hurricane Felix, a Category-5 storm, made landfall on the coast of Nicaragua in the early morning hours of September 4. Hundreds of homes were destroyed and nearly two dozen lives lost as the city of Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua sustained up to 160 miles-per-hour winds.
  • Hurricane Dean Hits Mexico & the Caribbean
    Hurricane Dean moved over southern Jamaica on August 19, directly hitting Kingston, the capital.  On August 22, the eye of the hurricane passed just north of the Belize-Mexico border.  The devastating winds did not respect the international delineation and caused destruction in both Belize and the Yucatan peninsula.

    In the midst of this tragedy, the Church of the Nazarene in South America is living out the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They are meeting each other’s immediate needs.
  • Peru Earthquake
    An earthquake rocked the coast of southern Peru on Wednesday, August 15 at a magnitude of 8.0. Over 500 people are dead, and thousands are homeless.
  • Flooding in Bangladesh
    The worst flooding in decades continues to devastate Bangladesh......One-third of the country has been declared a disaster zone.
  • Flood Hits the Lower Midwest
    Rainstorms throughout the South Central US have recently dropped as much as two feet of rain on parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas.
  • 500,000 Displaced by Fighting in Somalia
    The worst violence in 17 years has recently devastated, the city of Mogadishu, capital of Somalia.  It is reported that 500,000 people have fled the capital since the violence began three months ago.  A cholera outbreak has killed hundreds of children and elderly in the last eight weeks.
  • Tornado Devastates Kansas Town
    On Saturday, May 4th, a tornado with winds in excess of 200 mph devastated the southern Kansas town of Greensburg, killing at least eight and injuring dozens more.
  • Solomon Islands Faces Tsunami Destruction
    On April 2, 2007, an earthquake registering 8.1 resulted in a tsunami with waves between two and ten meters high on the coast of Gizo, Solomon Islands. At least 20 people have died as a result. The natural disaster has left thousands homeless and destroyed at least 13 villages.
  • Sri Lanka Cannot Find Peace
    Sri Lanka has been suffering from nearly 25 years of unrest close to civil war between minority Tamils and majority Singhalese. According to the UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency), over 150,000 Sri Lankans have recently fled to the Batticaloa area, leaving behind all their belongings.
  • Deadly Tornados hit Alabama
    Tornado's slammed into Enterprise, AL, Thursday March 1, 2007 killing at least 18 people and counting.
  • Mozambique Flooding Update
    Flying over the delta of the Zambezi River into the Sofala region of Mozambique, the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries team along with people from partner organizations saw an unbelievable sight—houses surrounded by water making it difficult to determine where the actual river bed was, acres of maize crops drowned, and roads covered by streams of water.

    During the night on February 10, 2007, Dave Restrick, a Nazarene missionary in Maputo, Mozambique, received a phone call. Rev. Fernando Gimo, the district superintendent of the Caia region, was calm but spoke of an approaching tragedy: "We are sitting on the roof of our huts, and the water is rising every hour, higher and higher.
  • Nazarene Pastor Dies in Cold Wave
    The north of Bangladesh, India, and the plains area of Nepal (Terai) have been overwhelmed by a severe cold wave. Many have already lost their lives, including a Nazarene Pastor.

  • Strong Typhoon Slams the Philippines
    Typhoon Durian landed in the Philippines on Thursday nearly missing the capital city of Manila. At maximum speeds of 190-225 km, the heavy rains resulted in landslides and mud flows causing fatalities estimated at over a thousand people. Many are still missing and the number of injured is still rising.
  • Middle East Crisis Update
    War between Israel and Hezbollah militants began on July 12th. The conflict continues, leaving behind destruction to buildings and thousands of displaced families.

    For the country of Indonesia, the 6.3 earthquake that ripped through the city of Yogyakarta on Saturday May 27, 2006 was another in a line of horrific natural disasters that began 18 months ago with the tsunami. Saturday’s quake killed over 5,000 people and left numerous other wounded.

    Poverty, natural disasters, conflicts, injustices, and food crises have increased in the last few years, and the most affected are the children.
