Tsunami Video Released; Relief Efforts Continue
NCM Update #9 on Tidal Wave Disaster Relief
Printable Version
On the island of Nias, located about 100 miles off the coast of Sumatra,
there is a village called Orahili Badalu. It is here that the Church
of the Nazarene has focused the tsunami relief efforts in Indonesia.
Due to the poor road conditions, all aid has to be hand-carried for
the last two miles of the journey. Nazarenes have delivered rice,
noodles, eggs, vegetables, tea, and basic utensils to the villagers.
In fact, the villagers have assisted in the efforts by walking the
two miles out to meet church volunteers to help carry supplies in.
You won’t find refugee tents in Orahili Badalu, because local
people who still have their homes have taken in their neighbors. There
is a spirit of cooperativeness that has streamlined relief efforts.
A local youth organization is running a kitchen camp to see that everyone
gets something to eat. The Church of the Nazarene has partnered with
sisters from the Order of Mother Teresa and have been offering medical
aid to tsunami victims in this coastal village. Warren Neal, a missionary
and a nurse by profession, has been spearheading these medical efforts
in the Sirombu district.
The next step in Nias is rehabilitation and development. The Church
of the Nazarene is able to assist in restoring livelihoods to farmers
and fishermen with tools, seedlings, and nylon ropes for nets. As
well, school equipment will be provided as the schools are rebuilt.
“Just weeks before the tsunami struck,” shared World
Mission Director Louie Bustle, “We had a graduate of Indonesia
Nazarene Theological College move to Nias to plant a Nazarene church.
This crisis has opened a unique window of opportunity to show the
people that Nazarenes genuinely care about people, physically, emotionally,
and spiritually. We appreciate your continued prayers and support
for the long process of restoration ahead.”
NCM has just released a 3.5-minute video of the tsunami relief work.
