"Community of Hope, a Compassionate Ministry Center in Washington
DC,
was awarded a Federal Grant of $624,580 per year for the each of the
next three years. HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt announced plans to award
105 new health center grants totaling more than $63 million. These
grants will help an estimated 632,000 Americans, including many without
health insurance; obtain comprehensive primary health care services.
The COH Health Clinic is the only one operating at a D.C. elementary
school. It is also the only health care facility operating in any
D.C.
school that is open to the public. Additionally, COH's clinic addresses
health care needs by providing primary care, outreach, and health
education services through approximately 400 primary medical care
visits
per month. The clinic serves not only the occupants of the transitional
housing apartments, but also residents of the surrounding Columbia
Heights neighborhood and throughout the city.
This grant continues President Bush's five-year initiative to help
communities across the country create or expand access to comprehensive
primary health care services. Launched in 2002, the initiative will
add
1,200 new and expanded health center sites and increase the number
of
people served annually from about 10 million to 16 million by 2006.
.Kelly McShane, executive director of the agency was ecstatic
about the award. She said, "This means a lot of good news and
stability
for the clinic. The funds will pay for increased hours, more providers,
a substance abuse counselor, a mental health therapist, a school nurse,
and a full dental program."
In 2003, a total of 5,300 visits were made to the Community of Hope
clinic and over 40% of these patients were uninsured, another 20%
covered by Medicaid.
