“You cannot even see a trace of where the Bodarie Nazarene Church once stood,” reports the District Superintendent of the Southeast Haitian District. “Fifteen members of that church alone were swept away by the flood waters and are reported as dead.” Severe flash flooding and mudslides along the border of Haiti and the Dominican Republic during the night of May 24 have resulted in a mounting death toll for Nazarenes and their neighbors.
In the Dominican Republic about 300 people have died; however, no Nazarene losses have been reported. South District Nazarenes and the Caribbean Region NCM office are mobilizing to distribute Crisis Care Kits, clothing, water, and vitamins to the Jimani area where more than 40,000 people were suddenly left homeless.
In Haiti the situation is more dismal, with almost 1,700 reported dead. Nazarenes in the community have lost loved ones, homes, churches, crops, and livestock. Because several of the towns described as “severely ravaged by storm” are currently accessible only by helicopter, we have not yet received word on the thousands of Nazarenes located there. Having lost everything, those affected will need food, water, clothes, medicines, and other assistance to restore their lives. Dr. John Smee, Caribbean Regional Director, stated, “These are times that demand our prayers. Please pray that we will soon be able to reach the most heavily affected areas with assistance to those who need it so much.”
