Quake Destroys Churches; Creates Crisis
For the country of Indonesia, the 6.3 earthquake that ripped through the city of Yogyakarta on Saturday was another in a line of
horrific natural disasters that began 18 months ago with the tsunami. Saturday’s quake killed over 5,000 people and left numerous
other wounded. Those injured are lining the streets of the city due to the overflow of hospitals and clinics. Flattened buildings
left 200,000 people homeless. Thousands of people were evacuated from nearby Mount Merapi, an area threatened with a volcanic
eruption after the quake. Driving rain is hampering relief efforts, forcing people back into unsafe buildings.
Four Nazarene churches and parsonages
were destroyed and several campus buildings and missionary homes were damaged from the
quake. In Panggang the church people distributed food to neighbors in spite of the destruction of their church building. The Nazarene
college cancelled classes for the week to help with disaster relief. Students mobilized to cook approximately 150 meals every day
this week. Meals are being wrapped in oil paper and distributed among the wounded. Tools were purchased for teams of students
to clean up rubble from broken houses. A visitation team is being assembled to visit patients in the local hospitals.
“The needs are great,” said missionary Bob McCroskey in an email from the stricken area. “The challenges are enormous. But God is
greater. We know we have great friends and a great Church that will rally around us. As we each do what we can do, God will help
us to help the suffering.”
Immediate needs are food supplies and water. Long-term needs are sacks of cement, tin roofing, nails, and wood for the rebuilding of
homes and churches, as well as household supplies. “Indonesia is a country battling great crisis.” stated World Mission Director
Louie Bustle. “In this time of uncertainty we need to rally around our brothers and sisters in Christ, not only helping them to
rebuild, but helping them to show the love of our Lord to their neighbors.”
