Flood Hits The Lower Midwest

Severe storms deluged parts of Minnesota this past weekend, dropping as much as a foot of rain in certain areas.  Heavy rains caused flooding that washed away bridges and roads in the Southeatern corner of the state.  As of Monday, Minnesota Emergency Management authorities were reporting at least six people killed.

More than two thousand residents have been evacuated from parts of Winona as well as the smaller communities of Houston, Stockton, Pickwick and Elba, in addition to a number of towns in Southeastern Wisconsin.  Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty has declared a state of emergency in six counties, ordering 240 National Guard soldiers to the area to assist in flood-relief and security.  The Army Corps of Engineers is using pumps and generators to avoid levee breeches along the Root and Mississippi rivers.

I the midst of tragedy, Nazarene Disaster Response is rallying around those affected, expressing the love of Christ in tangible ways.  Paul Haddix, Minnesota District NDR Director has set up a command center at the Winona Church of the Nazarene, which has had flooding the basement of the parsonage and church building.  NDR anticipates the need for volunteers to help in the clean-up of homes and businesses in Winona and the surrounding area.  Interested volunteers should contact the Minnesota District Office at (763) 561-2785 for more information.
