WORST FLOODING IN A DECADE

Download Printable PDF (12KB)

More than 10 million people across South Asia are confronting the worst monsoon floods for over a decade. Surging river waters have left seven million people homeless or marooned and hundreds dead in villages and towns across Bangladesh, eastern India, and Nepal. Most of the flood victims are the poorest of the poor in the world.

Twenty-five out of sixty-four districts/counties in Bangladesh have been affected, submerging crops and cutting off transportation, already pushing up food prices. Officials there are concerned with outbreaks of water-borne diseases as thousands of drinking wells have been submerged. Fast-rising floodwaters are rushing toward the capital city of Dhaka, where officials say the capital’s low-lying areas may be swamped within 24 hours.

Fourteen districts/counties have been severely affected, with several Nazarene churches destroyed in the Nilphamary area. Fresh water and food are critical needs. The longer the floods last, the higher the risk of more casualties and outbreaks of disease. People are bracing for still more flooding as dozens of rivers threaten to burst their banks.

World Mission Director Louie Bustle stated, “Your prayers for our brothers and sisters in Bangladesh and India would be greatly appreciated during this crisis. Many of them have had most or all of their belongings swept away. Let’s do what we can to help our fellow Nazarenes recover from this devastation.”
