Press Releases
Hurricane Emily Relief
Hurricane Emily struck the coast of northeast Mexico Wednesday morning
as a Category 3 hurricane with steady winds near 125 mph (220 kph).
The eye of the hurricane hit the Mexican coast about 75 miles south
of the US/Mexican border. Emily has already left hundreds homeless
and taken several lives across the Caribbean. Jamaica reported 5 killed
and several more deaths have been reported in Mexico in incidents
indirectly caused by the storm.
Rev. Lionel Brown, the D.S. of the Jamaica West District, reported
that there was minimal additional damage in his area but many Churches
that still hadn't been able to repair their roofs from last seasons
hurricanes had water damage from Emily. A Work and Witness team that
had previously been scheduled was able to bring in relief supplies
on Tuesday. The team never thought that they would be participating
in relief efforts when they planned their trip.
Previously, Hurricane Dennis had pounded the Caribbean claiming at
least 10 lives in Cuba as the storm roared across the island. Most
of the victims were killed in collapsed houses in two coastal towns.
Dennis is the strongest hurricane to form this early in the season
since 1851. The storm uprooted trees, flattened homes and flooded
streets, leaving 2.2 million people in Havana without power and in
the dark.
In Haiti, Hurricane Dennis brought huge waves crashing into the shore
as hundreds of islanders fled flooding along the coastline. The hurricane
is being blamed for the deaths of five people. Some roads and bridges
were washed away and homes were flooded. It's the first hurricane
of the season to hit the impoverished island.
Our Caribbean leaders send this message: “Thank you to those
who have been praying for the Caribbean people during this early and
already heavy hurricane season.” Please continue to pray for
those affected by the hurricane.
