This is like a second tsunami
In the heart of the Indian business district, torrential monsoon
rains are wreaking havoc on people's lives. Over 37 inches of rain
has fallen, resulting in the loss of electricity, mud slides, and
people stranded all over the city in offices, cars, airports, and
on the street as many roads are impassable due to high water and mud.
Thousands of lives have been claimed by the rains and the resulting
mud slides. Hundreds of people have died in Bombay alone, it is estimated
that more than a thousand have died in the federal state of Maharashtra.
The slums of Bombay are among the worst areas affected.
"This is like a second Tsunami," Rev. Hermann Gschwandtner, NCM coordinator
for South Asia states. Several Nazarene churches have been affected.
According to initial reports from the district superintendent Rev.
Wankhede, no Nazarene lives have been lost. Yet Rev. Wankhede is quick
to add, "But I am not sure. We have had no electricity, no water,
and no phone for the last few days. So I will have to wait. Our people
in Kanjur Slum, including children, fled to the roof of the small
NCM center, [surrounded by] 12 feet of water." The overall death toll
is now over 450 for Mumbai and around 1,000 for all of Maharashtra.
NCM has released funds for an initial response of clothing, food,
water, and other necessities, but more aid is needed. The Church of
the Nazarene in India will do its utmost to meet the challenge and
serve the suffering with the love of Christ.
