REFUGEE & IMMIGRANT SUPPORT
SEARCH PROJECTS
Around the world, 50 million people have been forced to flee their homes because of war, violence, persecution, or disasters. Half of them are children. Many are internally displaced within their home country; others—16.7 million people—have been forced to move across borders in search of safety and security. Half of the world’s refugees are children, and many flee their homes alone or in groups, making them especially vulnerable to human trafficking and other forms of violence. Tens of millions more are migrants who leave their homes because of hunger, violence, and poverty.

For children from Syria, life is filled with crisis and trauma, whether they are still living in the war-torn country or they are living in another country as refugees. Four Nazarene schools in the Middle East are helping 360 Syrian children gain stability and a quality education from caring teachers in a safe environment at a time when they need it most.
Approximately 200 students are Syrian children living inside Syria, where they face the effects of war on a daily basis. Another 160 students are Syrian refugees whose families fled the violence to live in Jordan or Lebanon, where they are safer but are most often living in poverty.

Fighting between government and rebel troops has brought inexpressible hardship and misery to thousands in the Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi. Fighting, rape, and violence against the innocent and helpless, looting, burning, and destruction are the daily experiences of many, while the noise of cries, gunshots, broken glass, and violent voices fill the night. The following morning often unveils a gruesome picture of both death and destruction. Female family members have been abused in front of their families, fathers brutally hacked to death with machetes, and children are being forced to join the military groups as child soldiers.

As the church, we are called to care for the vulnerable and welcome the “stranger” (Matthew 25:35-40). NCM partners with local churches around the world to support refugees and immigrants through education for children, assistance for persecuted Christians, emergency relief for families in crisis, and support for families who have been resettled. In the United States, NCM also works with compassionate ministry centers that are providing legal assistance for people seeking a path to citizenship.
