Liberia Latrines Project
The 14-year civil war in Liberia destroyed most of the infrastructure in the country. Houses and installations are of no exception. There is no piped running water. Sewer drainage is non-existent in many towns and is blocked in most parts of the capital, Monrovia. Because of the civil crisis, many people have moved from rural areas to dwell in the capital. Sanitation problems and hygienic hazards are high. There are many reported cases of diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid fever. Private or public toilet facilities are almost non-existent.
NCM wants to improve the sanitation and thus the health condition of 500 families in Monrovia and Grand Gedeh by constructing 12 large community pit latrine facilities in 12 villages or communities, benefiting over 25,000 people. This will have a positive impact on the physical health of the inhabitants of these communities and an improvement of health among the people translates into positive social transformation. This project will bring the church very close to its communities, will enhance friendship evangelism, and ultimately show the love and care of Christ in a very tangible way!
Each latrine facility will cost $2,500 USD, while the labor to erect the latrines is provided by the local community. The entire project would require an amount of $30,000 USD.
