Hurricane Irma, a category-5 event that is the largest Atlantic hurricane in recorded history, has already devastated several Caribbean islands and is barreling toward the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Florida. It is expected to create havoc along the eastern U.S. coast up through Georgia and into the Carolinas.

The storm has caused mass devastation on the island of St. Martin/Sint Maarten. A new Nazarene church in Marigot, St. Martin, was flattened and completely destroyed. The Church of the Nazarene in Cripple Gate, St. Martin, lost its roof and everything inside was damaged beyond repair. The Quartier d’Orleans Church of the Nazarene also lost part of its roof.

According to district superintendent Daniel Blaise, 75 percent of Nazarene church members in St. Martin lost their homes entirely. There are no large shelters they can turn to.

The immediate needs are food, water, and safe shelter.

Churches in Irma’s path are bracing for the storm and preparing to response. Communities in Haiti are still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Matthew last year. Church leaders in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina have communicated that they are preparing to respond to the needs in their communities.

The needs will be great, and the path to recovery will be long. Your help is needed.
